1. CBD otherwise known as "cannabidiol" which is pronounced, canna-bid-dye-all is the second most abundant chemical compound in the cannabis plant. There are over 60 cannabinoids in cannabis and THC is the most abundant with CBD coming in second place.
In recent years CBD has gained popularity for its many potential medical benefits without the intoxicating effects as with THC. Advancements in breeding techniques have now rendered strains of the marijuana/cannabis plant to be 99% CBD and less than .3% THC. These low levels of THC render the plant legal to formulate into tincture forms, edibles, pills, salves, patches and other consumable products which are legal to distribute in all 50 states.
2. The chemical compound CBD is non-psychoactive and does not render a "high" like its buddy THC, although both compounds come from the same cannabis plant, Sativa L. CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant in a variety of methods as any other herbal tincture on the market today. CBD is as safe as peppermint oil and in that regard, CBD Oil can be extracted to isolate out the THC completely or almost completely depending on the method of extraction. CBD is known to counter and even block the intoxicating effects of THC. It is believed that originally the Cannabis Sativa L. plant that grew in the wild had higher levels of CBD compound in them naturally but over time as the demand for the THC component increased, the hybrid cannabis and plants and seeds slowly converted to higher THC strains. Now the trend is returning to more CBD dominant strains as the benefits of CBD oil are becoming more popular by the day. There are no known side-effects from ingesting CBD, even in large quantities.
The Current Drug Safety review rendered CBD safe and it “does not interfere with several psychomotor and psychological functions.”
3. CBD has an amazing range of possible medicinal benefits to the human body. CBD can be extracted and isolated out as a single compound of the cannabis plant into a white crystaline powder which can be rendered water soluble to add to beverages, edibles and cosmetics. Or CBD can be carefully isolated from the THC component, allowing the other beneficial cannabinoids of the cannabis plant to remain intact in the CBD oil. This phenomena where the CBD and other plant cannabinoids and terpenes remain and are purposely separated from the THC in the form of a liquified CBD oil. CBD oil extract is similar in consistency as olive oil. The extraction method whereby a blend of cannabinoids along with the CBD compound remain is known to scientists as "the entourage effect."
What remains is a nutritious blend of CBD rich hemp oil. CBD Hemp Oil is considered to be a Super Food - it offers a complete spectrum of natural proteins, with all 20 amino acids used by the human body, including all eight essential amino acids. It contains the perfect ratio of omega fatty acids 3, 6 & 9. CBD Hemp has high levels of enzymes, fiber, vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, D, and E and is rich in essential minerals such as calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus. CBD is packed full of natural carotenes, flavonoids, keytones, nitrogenous compounds and terpenes.
It is believed the nutritious characteristics of the CBD oil lend it the wonderful medicinal effects. However, most of the clinical research has been conducted on animals with few human trials. According to a 2013 review published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, studies have found CBD to possess the following potential medical properties:
4. CBD neutralizes the intoxicating effects of THC. CBD seems to offer natural reduction in the feeling of the traditional marijuana high. Studies shed light on the fact that CBD lowers the intoxicating effects of THC, and mitigates memory impairment and paranoia. The more abundant the CBD compound in the marijuana cigarette, the more relaxed the smoker will feel with fewer sensations of anxiety or that freaked out feeling. CBD is completely safe, even in large doses, it has never been known to cause an overdose of any kind. CBD when made into oil form or processed into foods and beverages is considered a health food by the FDA. But CBD is found naturally in all cannabis strains, both endica and sativa strains alike.
Some strains of CBD cannabis are known to increase alertness. CBD in some instances counteract the drowsiness and sleepiness effects often associated with THC.
Both CBD and THC have been found to present no risk of lethal overdose. However as more people ingest the whole raw cannabis plant in blended smoothies without smoking the cannabis or heating it in any way, anecdotal evidence is beginning to show that eating cannabis raw as a food source is the safest and most medicinal method of ingesting the potential healing agents in the plant. Medical cannabis users may be advised to choose strains of cannabis with higher levels of CBD over THC to reduce the frequency of intoxication.
Prohibition against cannabis started in the United States in 1937 with the Marihauana Tax Act. Prior to this cannabis was considered a medicine that was sold over the counter by pharmacists for a sleep aid and for convulsion among other ailments.
